Teresa O'Kane had always longed to see the world. She owned scads of travel books and maps and was about to buy yet another bookcase to hold the many Lonely Planet guides and travel essays that she had accumulated over the years when she turned to her husband and said, "I'm tired of storing our dreams. Let's live them!" Within a month, they bought one-way tickets to Morocco, leased out their home, and set out on a journey of the African continent top to bottom from Casablanca to Cape Town. Transiting 17 countries in 10 months, mostly by public transport, they explored wild, exotic, and historic locations they had only dreamed of and some they had never heard of. From sandy Timbuktu, to a tiny lemur populated island in Madagascar, the author embraces Africa. She strokes the manes of lions, contracts malaria (twice), flies a micro light over Victoria Falls, earns a level one certification as a South African safari guide, discovers that an insect has turned her foot into a nursery for hundreds of eggs, grapples with the negative effects of foreign aid, and rubs elbows with European royalty deep within the Dogon in Mali. O'Kane offers an entertaining and enlightening look into overland travel on the African continent. Filled with helpful budget minded travel tips, this hilarious and inspiring book may find you yearning to take a career break of your own. Teresa is currently on another year long expedition in Africa, this time in her own 1973 Land Rover Series lll named N'doto (Dream). You can follow her travels at teresaokane.blogspot.com

Safari Jema A Journey of Love and Adventure from Casablanca to Cape Town (Audible Audio Edition) Teresa O'Kane Jennifer Groberg Books

On their 10-month, Safari Jema, pan-African overland adventure from Casablanca to Cape Town, Teresa O’Kane and her husband Scott were charged by an elephant, a hippo, and, if I recall correctly, semi-charged by the occasional monkey or baboon. The closest I’ve ever come is having been overcharged by a cellular phone company – twice. So, for this homebody, vicariously experiencing where, how and why they travel so extensively and wonderfully, indeed living their entire lives so richly around that, on a budget, was the next best thing (and can be even more cost effective --- especially on Kindle).

In no way your traditional advisory travelogue of where to go, what to see, and where to stay and eat – although, and I am not making this up, immediately upon finishing the last chapter, my wife and I hightailed it over to MarRosso, the East African cuisine café that just opened in the local strip mall, and regaled its Eritrean owner with a solid 10 minutes of O’Kane’s anecdotes and humorous observations about Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanganyika, Zanzibar, and that general vicinity. So much more fun than just taking the Google itinerary. Sopped it all up like injera in monsoon season; although the wide screen TV of the track and field event in Birmingham, England on the wall behind us, with East Africans winning just about every race, certainly must also have contributed to the success of our set.

I’d also urge a perusal of some of the other celebratory Amazon reviews here that do a much better job than I ever could of sharing how this was not only a masterful mélange of information, observation, compassion, humor, relationships – but just damned good story telling entertainment. An easy enough read, that you’ll want to circle back to your favorite chapters, like a Cape Buffalo – but in a good way.

Safari Jema A Journey of Love and Adventure from Casablanca to Cape Town (Audible Audio Edition) Teresa O'Kane Jennifer Groberg Books Reviews

4.5 stars. From Casablanca to Cape Town, Africa, they had a safari jema, a good journey.

I couldn’t do it at this time in my life, probably never, but they did and still do. I really enjoyed traveling vicariously with this couple. Every chapter was enjoyable, humorous, and the real deal. You can put it down and pick it up anytime without losing a sense of their story or confusion about time and place. I read it in sections in-between other reads. It was a refreshing palate cleanser of sorts in-between other books. Highly recommended for anyone who likes to travel or wants to experience the heart of the continent, its people, and wildlife. What an adventure!
Traveling has always been my passion. I have been every where I have wanted to go with the exception of Africa. Due to some physical issues I will never be able to make this journey.I know the author through her brothers. Her stories were always so amazing and interesting. I wanted to know about the Africa Teresa saw and loved, so I purchased the book when it first came out. I have read it several times. It was easy, captivating, interesting and such descriptive writing, I felt like I was along on the trip with them. I’ve shared the book with several friends who felt the same as I did. I can not wait for her next book. It’s time to travel again with Teresa and Scott. BTW not only is her writing amazing, so are her photos.
Teresa O'Kane and her husband Scott, on this trip to Africa, plan to go from Casablanca to Cape Town.
In the beginning they sign up with an Australian mechanic who was building an overland truck in England Intending to drive it from England to Cape Town South Africa, and was looking for adventurous people, to share the experience and cost of the trip. They flew into Casablanca , and the following day with local transportation met the truck in the port city of Cueta, on the Northernmost tip of Africa, where the truck was to disembark.
This is where their many adventures begin. I loved this book as it was a bit different in the style in which the author portrays Africa, you do get your usual Safari's etc, but they seem to do a lot of it, in a different way from other books I have read on African travel. The way the author talks about the small things that bring them joy on this continent, the people and their ways, the transportation, food etc. It was a very refreshing, and very personal story.
We follow them as they have for the most part, some wonderful and unique experiences. In the beginning and at the end they talk about some of their previous trips, and of how anyone can make these trips possible. I look forward to more of their travels.
